Style Tour

Style Tour

In Weeks 1–6, you will create a Style Guide consisting of the following:

Written analyses of different artworks, each work representing a different style
An original artwork created specifically for this assignment, in one of the styles discussed
Description of your original artwork and your process in creating it
Your finished presentation should be professional, creative, and posted to the W5 Assignment 2 Dropbox by Wednesday, September 23, 2015.

This week’s Style Guide will focus on three Modernist art movements, studied in Week 5, of your choice, for example, Dada; Precisionism; Surrealism; Constructivism; de Stijl; Bauhaus; Art Deco; and early twentieth-century photography, architecture, and sculpture. Choose works of art produced during the historical period we are studying this week. Arrange them chronologically in your presentation along with your written work. Include the following identifying information (if available):

Title
Artist
Date the piece was created
Art movement and/or style
Media
In your own words, write a description and analysis of each work using visual language, with terms from the elements of art and principles of design table listed below (at least 3 of the most relevant art terms per each work of art). Work to explain the trademark attributes of each style and artist. Include discussion of context in each analysis, such as how the subject and style of the artwork expresses historical, cultural, and/or biographical information. Conclude how each artwork is similar and different in terms of style and philosophy.

You will also choose one of this week’s styles to explore more completely by creating an original work of art in that style and utilizing specific attributes of it. You may use the media of your choice (traditional media, such as pencil, paint, photography, and Photoshop, are all acceptable). Take care to implement elements of the style and subject you wrote about while creating your original artwork. Include a written description of your artwork explaining the style you worked in, the elements of it you implemented, and the process of how you went about doing so. Place your studio assignment and description at the end of your presentation.

At minimum, your Style Guide should be approximately 800 words.

Checklist

Professional presentation with images included
Identified three different works of art from this week, each in different styles
Description and analysis of each work of art using art terms
Contextual discussion of each work (historical, cultural, social, etc.)
Compare and contrast the two works of art in terms of style and philosophy
Original artwork made specifically for this assignment in one of the styles explored
Discussion of your original artwork and its process, including identification and explanation of style
Reliable and scholarly sources properly cited using MLA style
Formal Description/Analysis and Cultural/Contextual Hints

After you choose a work of art ask yourself, Do I see line? If the answer is yes, explain the line that you see. Then ask yourself, Do I see color? If the answer is yes, explain exactly what color you see (work your way through all of the terms). If you don’t see a term, explain the lack of that element. For example, if there is a lack of movement in a sculpture, explain why that is significant to the philosophy of the style it is in.

Note: Rubrics provide an explanation for full or partial credit. If a criterion listed is not met, you will receive a zero for that section.
